About the Denial Series
The Denial Series paintings are abstract references to the human figure, in a state of folly (lack of good sense; foolishness). The figure is a favorite subject of mine, and abstracting it to represent topics of importance to me is a theme of my work (see more here in a background blog post, and in my Instagram @_pario). Images start with themes (in this series based upon the confluence of career observations and personal values), observation of and study of the human figure, and drawing–usually traditional sketchbooks and other paper (see Instagram and Drawings + page). Each painting and its processes make me feel like I’ve solved a puzzle.
Six mixed media steps are used in making the series. Each base is saturated hue aerosols in horizontal layers. Abstracted figures are painted in oil. Then, various mediums are applied a day later to achieve patterns of movement. Next, paintings are photographed. Digital layers are added in photoshop. Motion (in some of the images in the series) is digital. Because the order of these steps dominates the character of the final image, I call it transitive mixed media.
