Artist Statement
I’m interested in the way things are connected or not. In the way we see and live in our worlds. Connection seems to me to be a beautiful part of life.
I've learned in my life experiences that problems can occur when connected systems are disconnected (such as natural systems), or poorly integrated (such as societal, governmental, business, and cultural systems).
These problems represent various forms of loss. To a good extent, I've 'been in the room' and observed (and worked to overcome) the states of mind that lead to decisions that lead to loss in our neighborhoods, cities, and beyond. My current ''states of mind' theme and 'denial' series are about those decisions.
Because I have studied and love figurative art, I root my designs--even abstractions--in the human figure--specifically expressing states of mind that I have personally observed leading to loss. So, as I am a bit of a mongrel with two disparate realms in my life--urban economics and art, you can look at these abstractions as my reporting, editorializing, and expressing concern. Or, just working it out. It is cathartic for me, hopefully prompting awareness and curiosity in others--and hopefully contributing to positive change.
